Simple Pleasure Thursday

It’s that time again: Simple/Guilty Pleasure Thursday. I recently saw a quote that said if you enjoy it, it’s not guilty. What say you?

This week I have a Simple Pleasure. It is grilling season or cooking out in general!

This past Sunday I was able to “fire up” the grill and cook outside, for the first time this year! This is one of my favorite things to do in the summer. If we are lucky our current grill will make it through the summer 😳 or we will be able to find a new one that I like, lol!

This is the grill we currently have:

We have had it for a good six years now and it has been great. But the weather is starting to take its toll on the legs/feet; as in one has almost completely rusted away. I have propped it up with a brick for now….really! Apparently this particular grill is no longer available, so getting the same one will not be possible. I will see if I can buy replacement legs, since otherwise it is fine, and if it’s not cost prohibitive get them. I have a feeling we are going to be searching for a new grill though.

That will start the charcoal vs gas saga with “The Man”….I do not like gas, charcoal just tastes better, but would be willing to compromise (reluctantly) on a hybrid. They have a gas and charcoal side. I will admit that gas would let us cook out a bit longer or start earlier, but you just don’t get the same flavor…since I’m the one that uses it (he rarely touches it) it should be what I like. True?

Do you prefer gas or charcoal? What type of grill do you like, i.e. kettle shape, box, etc? “The Man” has mentioned getting “The Big Green Egg” a time or two or almost every year for a while now.

I personally, just can not wrap my head around spending that much money for a grill. If that isn’t enough it uses “special” charcoal/fuel, an added cost, of course….do any of you have a “green egg” and if so, how long have you had it and is it “worth” the money? Would you buy it again? We would need to at least get the X-Large one. I think the XX-Large would be too much and the Large would be just a bit too small.

What is your simple or guilty pleasure for this week? I can’t wait to hear what you have to say!

  1. Hello fellow BAMR!! My husband is the cook in the house most nights, and grills year-round …. especially since his 50th birthday, when we gifted him with his dream grill, the Primo ceramic grill (similar concept as the big Green Egg, but oval-shaped so he can fit a whole rack of ribs or grill with split heat ….) …. he SWEARS by this grill and assures us it was worth every extravagant penny. He has used it for classic grilling, but also baking pizzas, etc. He uses it several nights a week … even in winter …. in northern Minnesota ….

    1. Hello Kat, and welcome! I wish I could trust my husband to cook…ok, not really, lol! Thank you for the input! I’ve never heard of the Primo, but will have to check it out. Is really that good or is it just a “man thing” 😉 Using it such cold winter temps is impressive! Does it hold the heat as well as in warmer weather?

      1. It does not hold heat quite as well but much more impressively than regular grills. I think once you learn how to use them the ceramic grills are quite impressive – lots of online resources to help. My husband researched for eons and then I researched too and my boys and I surprised him with the grill purchased and set up at home for his 50th birthday!

  2. And …. we don’t use “special” charcoal but for years have used the natural lump charcoal instead of briquets due to healthier profile, and better food taste. Buying better quality natural lump charcoal does make a difference (versus cheap stuff at a Sam’s Club, for example, where you may end up with chunks of plywood or other cheap pieces in the mix).
