Black Friday Shopping

Woo Hoo! It’s Friday! Not just any Friday this week but the Friday after thanksgiving! That makes it Black Friday! A day for shopping! The “official” kickoff to the holiday shopping season! Oh and let’s not forget stuffing ourselves with those yummy leftovers….

Are you a Black Friday shopper? Are you Thanksgiving night shopper? Did you clear away your Thanksgiving day feast and hit the stores last night? No judgment, just wondering.

I hope you had a great day with family and friends. We had a quiet relaxing day of sorts. That’s because we aren’t having our “traditional” Thanksgiving dinner until Sunday. That means I’ll be going crazy the rest of the weekend, lol!

I have never been much of a Black Friday shopper. Watching the news and seeing people go crazy and attacking others over saving a couple of dollars was enough to keep me home! I said long ago there was nothing out there worth risking your life over! That’s not to say I have never been out and about, and the few times I have stood in line for something it was a good experience. I know some of the stories are the extreme and not the norm, but boy are they scary!

“The Man” took off work one year just so we could go shopping on Black Friday! I don’t think he believed how crazy it was out there, until we got to the toy store and the line was wrapped three times around the park lot at midnight-ish! After standing there for what seemed like forever, he gave up, lol!!! We wandered through a few more stores that were open and came home and went to bed. Later we got up to get to Barnes and Noble before they opened. That year they offered a special edition nook e-reader for $79 . That was my present to me. I had made the jump to e-readers before that with the nook color, but after some time realized a regular reader would be better for reading while traveling in the car. I have since switched to the nook glow light…..speaking of which a new edition the nook glow 3 is being released today and is only $99! If you are an e-reader person that might be for you! That year was “The Mans” first and last foray into Black Friday shopping! He is now okay with going to work, lol!

I’m perfectly ok staying home and shopping online! I know there are some crazy good deals out there, my inbox has been flooded with them, and I bet your is too! Here is one of my favorites.

I just got off the phone with “The Man” a few minutes ago and he said “I’m surprised you don’t want to go to the “black store”” as  he calls it. Well, now the you mentioned it, we could go……lol! I probably will not. I don’t “need” or want anything so why go?

Last night going out wasn’t an option for me. The only vehicle I could have taken was “the bus”, it can be a challenge to park on a regular shopping day, there was no way I was going to try and park and maneuver that thing around parking lots full of crazy shoppers 😂😂

To help you out with your shopping I have a few deals of my own to share with you.

PLUNDER DESIGN: Plunder will have a lot of Black Friday specials throughout the day. The savings are really great but there is a catch. The specials will be released at different times throughout the day and no one knows when they will release. What I do know it that nothing will be released today before 9am EST! Here is a sneak peek at what I know will be coming out today. There could possibly be more throughout the weekend and Monday.

I will be posting to the Facebook page when they are released. Just go to http://plunderdesign.com/grandma2glamma, hit the shop button and pick a party that has my name in it. These items will be found under the Specials tab.

Below are a few items that were released yesterday and as of right now are still available.

I just love this one for the tweens/teens. What a great stocking stuffer!

In addition to such great specials. If your order totals $30 or more (excluding tax and shipping) you can choose to add one of the items below for every $30 you spend. You would pay $10 for the Tony necklace and $5 for the Lilo earrings. This is while supplies last (of course). These have changed a couple of times this month. So don’t be surprised if you go to check out and your offer is different.

Legging Army: There is a site wide 10% discount. That will apply all weekend. Who doesn’t  love or need leggings?

Rodan+Fields: You can’t get much better than this deal. Today only, make a purchase as a Preferred Customer (PC) and you pay what I pay!!! That means any product OR Any Business Kit if you decide to become a consultant. Just go to http://jearlingbencivenni.myrandf.comTo become a PC just scroll down to the Subscribe and Save option. If you are interested in the business then message me and we will hop on the phone and chat.

Happy Shopping!

YTT-Weekend 3

Happy Monday!  What a weekend I had! Yoga Teacher Training-YTT weekend three!

An experience of a lifetime on so many levels! I don’t know where or how to start. It was a very emotional weekend and it was designed to be so. Little did I know when I wrote my last blog post that I was playing right into the weekend.

How are y’all today? Did you have a good weekend? Did you do anything fun?

It seems winter has decided to pay us an early visit and I’m still looking for fall, lol! Last weekend I was dreading getting up Saturday morning for the #saturday7amsocialclub meeting, the weather report said we were going down to 19 degrees with a single digit wind chill! I was not looking forward to that! It didn’t make it quite that low, 21 was the official temperature and the wind chill didn’t seem as bad as they predicted. After the meeting I headed to the gym for a workout with Jeff. I’m not sure why, since we are so off schedule and it will be next weekend before I see him again since I had YTT this past weekend and he had his second powerlifting competition. He took first place in his division, BTW!!!

I had to be prepared for my first practice teach Saturday. I had to teach a 45 minute class and I didn’t  know until Friday night what posture and pranayama (breath) I had to teach! That was the scariest part. The rest is that each segment is “timed”. The easy part was putting it together, making it last for the time needed was the hard part! And I was short by 7 minutes! I had to rewrite part of what I thought I was going to do after I got home at 10:30 Friday night, then start putting the rest of the class together. I made it to bed at 1:00 Saturday morning, to be backup at 5:00…..I was running on adrenaline and caffeine all day!

Now it’s time to start preparing for the next class. I will have less time to do my homework. We are back on a regular schedule, this last time there were a few extra weeks between classes due to a yoga retreat in India. How great would that be?

I have been staying on track with my WW plan for the past two weeks. I spent one week pretty much staying with the Simply Filling plan. Last week I followed the traditional Smart Points and did okay, but I am also noticed I give myself permission to be a little more “free” with my choices. The weekend was a bit of a challenge. I had control because I took my food, and if I didn’t take it I didn’t have access to junk food. I have to be sure to take plenty of protein to keep myself going with the intensity of the weekend. I made that mistake the first week. The down side is I come home and need to have dinner. Once I’m home and start eating I don’t want to stop. I have to make myself go upstairs or I will eat my way through the house!

For those who follow or have ever followed WW you know the program changes every few years with some tweaks in between. I asked my leader, Amy, a couple of weeks ago about any upcoming changes (of course she couldn’t/wouldn’t spill the beans). I am actually looking forward to the changes/tweaks this time since I feel like I need a “shake up”. Even though Amy didn’t tell me what was coming, I did get a sneak peek last week. The new changes have already rolled out in the UK and some of the members there have posted about it on connect (our WW message board). Now I am really excited and have started exploring it a bit! It will officially roll out here the weekend of December 3rd. I will keep you posted about my thoughts and progress. If any of you in the UK follow Weight Watchers let us know what you think of the new plan so far.

Can you believe it’s Thanksgiving  week already? Are you ready? Not me. I’m still trying to get my act together for that. We are actually going to have our Thanksgiving on Sunday, so I have a few extra days to prepare. That’s just a little bit exciting to me. It was even “The Mans” idea! I think everyone was shocked by that!!!

“The Man” went grocery shopping alone this week while I was in class. I told him not to worry about the “extra” holiday foods, that I would go out during the week and get whatever we needed. He has done mostly ok with the regular shopping but….I wasn’t ready to let him loose with the holiday food task. Did he listen? Noooooooo…..all things considered he did ok. We do have food we don’t need. He even bought sweet potatoes! “The Man” has never bought a sweet potato in his life. Now they are so big that one will feed 2-3 people, but he bought sweet potatoes. I am thankful he tried. Letting go and being ok with what he brings on from the store on these weeks has been hard. But he does try. We won’t starve. He may not make the healthiest food choices, but we won’t starve.

Believe Them

Beware.

This is not my usual blog post. In fact it might be considered, by some, downright controversial. But I am so disgusted with some of the things I’m hearing and reading this week, that I have to jump on my soap box. I have to speak out.

Women are being villanized (is that a word, sp?) left and right to no end. Why? Because they dare to come forward about sexual abuse that happened many years ago. The question is being asked “why did they wait X-number of years to come forward?” “This can’t be true or they wouldn’t have waited”.

Why? Why did they wait?

Because of the reactions they are receiving now!!!  They are being victimized all over again. It has probably taken them this long to be able to deal with the backlash that is occurring and even now I would imagine there are times they are having second thoughts, to some degree, about speaking out. It is hard enough for a victim to come forward when the abuser is a regular everyday guy or gal (yes women abuse too) but when it is someone in a position of power/authority it magnifies the situation. By power or authority that may only be an adult when you are a child. It doesn’t necessarily mean that person is a lawyer, judge, or other “high-ranking” type person, but as we see, it can be. Who is going to be believed most likely? I think we can see every day how that usually plays out.

How do I know this?

I am a survivor of child molestation and sexual abuse. I was first abused by a family member; at the age of NINE. I didn’t tell anybody. Why? Because I was threatened. I was threatened with more abuse (a beating, spanking, whipping, whatever you called it back then). I was told I would be taken away from my family. That’s what abusers do, especially to children. One day I went to spend the night with my aunt. The abuser took me to her house. She realized based on my actions something wasn’t right and flat-out questioned me, after he left. Yes, my aunt. Not my mother, who was clueless and self-absorbed. At first I denied it. I was scared. But, my aunt had the good sense to be persistent and I eventually told her. She contacted the proper authorities and the investigation ensued. It was in the very early 1970’s and things then were nothing like today (or maybe they were). What I remember is that: I was physically examined (at nine, can you imagine?) there was dead sperm found in my vagina, the abuser was arrested, made bail (his wife, my half-sister, believed him) a court case followed and he was found not guilty. He was more credible than a nine-year old girl/child.

Guess what?

He went on to continue abusing (his own children) SURPRISE…..around 1988 he pistol whipped my sister, went after their daughter again; and she shot and killed him!

I often wondered how my aunt, who never had children knew. That went to her grave with her. I know “why” she supposedly never had children. According to the stories “something happened to her” as a child that prevented her from being able to have children. As I got older I began suspect she had been abused too. You do develop a sixth sense about people and can spot an offender.

The abuse didn’t stop with him. As a young teenager it happened again. At church. By a church member, someone who was also a church “worker” with the youth groups. I never told a soul. Why? Because I knew I would not be believed. Who would believe me over a “man of god”? Telling had worked so well for me already. So I kept quiet and stayed as far away as I could. I honestly think I was a prime target because of the first situation. I also think because I never received counseling or support when it happened the first time I believed it was ok. I wasn’t worthy (on some level) to not have this happen to me. This person also abused others. Ironically, several years ago someone else took his life too.

You know what they say. Karma is a bitch!

If I said told you I didn’t do a little happy dance when I heard about both of their deaths, I would be lying.

They eventually got their comeuppance on this earth. Sadly they continued to inflict pain on others before it happened.

It still affects me deeply to this day. Most of the time I think I have moved on. But when I hear the things we are hearing now it brings it all back to the surface! I have always been hyper vigilant in knowing who my children and grandchildren are around (as much as is possible). I check the sex offender registry often. If a new sex offender moves into the neighborhood I make sure they come nowhere near my littles. I will not move to a new house without checking first. I cannot stop someone from moving into a house near me, I can control whether or not I knowingly move next to them.

To my children and anyone else. If your child, grandchild, niece, nephew or anyone tells you they are being abused or harassed BELIEVE THEM!!! If it is proven they are wrong, so be it. BELIEVE THEM FIRST!! Abusers continue to get away with these heinous acts because we doubt the accuser over the abuser! I don’t care if they tell you it’s your best friend since you were twelve years old. I don’t care if it’s a family member. For gods sake BELIEVE THEM!

Today on Facebook, I saw posts by “friends” making light of the recent allegations in the news. I don’t do this lightly, but I have removed them from my friends. I will begin removing anyone from my circle who does this or defends such actions. Someone told me recently I need more friends on Facebook. Well, my list is going to be dwindling…..I have no desire to be associated with anyone like that. I can only imagine how they would act or think if this were their daughter, wife, mother, sister.

Why are these particular women choosing now to speak out? I don’t know. Maybe because there was the #me too campaign a few weeks ago on social media? Maybe they are realizing they are not alone? They have a voice. They will be heard.

Today I urge you to speak out if you have been abused and silent. Even if it is too late for “anything to be done”. Even the offender is dead and gone. Don’t carry this around with you any longer. Don’t let them keep a hold on you!

There is more I would like to say, and one day I might. I will end here for today, though as my thoughts are becoming jumbled and I don’t want to ramble.

Until the next time

My Special Treat

It’s Wednesday, again.

How is your week going? Do you tend to get into a mid-week slump by now?

Last week my friend Susie from the blog PenelopeSeraphina posted about how to combat the mid-week slump. If this is you, you should go check it out here.

If you’ve noticed on Wednesday I try to focus my posts on weight loss or workouts or both. They do kind of go hand in hand. And I have not been the strictest on following any plan this year, so you might be wondering why I’m telling you what I finally found at the grocery store this past weekend.

My beloved peppermint ice cream!

Actually, I have been on the hunt for several weeks now. And stopped short of doing a little happy dance in the aisle. Just what I need when I’ve been struggling to stay in track, right? If you notice I did get the lower fat version, which is lower in WW smart points. At this point I am also only allowing my self one spoonful after dinner. This is my strategy for not over indulging and making it last longer for when I can no longer get it later in the year.

I have been doing really well this week. I decided to follow the simply filling WW plan to get myself in check. So far it has worked, but it is truly one day at a time. The leftover Halloween candy has not been a trigger either. Let’s hope I didn’t just jinx that…..

There is a story behind my peppermint ice cream. I shared it as one of my Simple/Guilty Pleasures a while back.

When I was a little girl, as far back as I can remember, my dad would take me to Regency Square Mall in Jacksonville, FL.  We would usually stop into the ice cream shop (the one with 30+ flavors). Back “in the day” they had peppermint candy ice cream. I almost always got that. Once in a while I would go rouge and get bubblegum, but I always came back to my peppermint. One day I was old enough for a double scoop of that deliciousness! I thought I was something else walking around with that big side by side double cone! As I grew up I would still get that peppermint ice cream. Now they no longer have it, or if they do it’s only at special times and there isn’t one close enough to know.

One day, probably 30+ years ago, we were getting some items from the Schwann’s man/truck. Lo and behold come holiday time they had peppermint ice cream! I was ecstatic! Then we stopped using them and I lost it for a time. After moving to Maryland I discovered Friendly’s restaurants and ice cream and they had it! Then one day it was in the grocery stores around holiday time. This girl was beyond excited! Now every year I look forward to finding it and reliving a little piece of my childhood and special memories of my dad. Isn’t it funny, I can still see the spot where that ice cream store was and see myself standing there next to daddy ordering it?

When it hits the shelves seems to vary by year. I found it one year in September! Usually it’s mid to late October, but this year it was “late”. Maybe that’s just my opinion, but by golly they need to get with the program! This is one thing I will always work into my WW plan.

I always wish daddy were here to share it with me. But it always brings back fond memories of him and a time when life was a little bit simpler. I imagine he is smiling down when I find it. It makes me a little melancholy and this time of year I tend to go inside for a bit anyway. Because of that I may not post as often the next couple of months, but we will see.

I realized a couple of days ago I also have “post race let down”. If you are a runner and run races you may have experienced this. You finish the last race on your calendar and have nothing in the works to train for. It’s nice to have a break from the training routine, but it doesn’t take long for wanderlust to set in. Now it’s not as if I have nothing to work towards. YTT isn’t going to be getting any easier. In fact, it’s going to be ramping up in intensity over the next couple of months. This is what I really need to be focusing on. I didn’t start that just for fun.

The other day “The Man” and I were talking about the races and he asked if I was going back to my twice a week sessions, with Jeff, now that the race is over. I told him I wasn’t sure yet, since I haven’t talked to Jeff about scheduling. He said working out with Jeff maybe why I was able to run those races back to back. I told him that was most likely true, along with yoga. As much as I want to get back on my regular schedule with Jeff and start training for a powerlifting meet, I need to be realistic with what I already have going on, physically and time wise. I definitely need to sit down with Jeff and make a realistic plan! I’m really good at getting myself into too much at one time.

With the holidays coming I really need to watch myself and not stretch myself too thin. Of course, picking up heavy stuff might just get me through the craziness!

Plunder and Rodan+Fields will be ramping up with holiday specials and goodies, and I need to be ready for that.

In fact Plunder just rolled out a few specials today! These are all limited quantity and while supplies last. As they come in I will post them here and on my Facebook page. If you follow my blog page they will be posted there as well as my personal page. If we are not already Facebook friends you can send me a friend request to Janet Earling.

Along with these specials Plunder announced reduced shipping for orders under $25! This is HUGE! Time For A Change

Happy Monday! It’s a new week, with a twist…the time has changed, “fallen back”, it’s getting dark earlier, and I’m ready to hibernate. What about you?

Did you have a good weekend? Or maybe I should ask did you have a good week (It’s been almost week since I posted here). Did you do anything fun? How have you fared with the time change? Are ready to go to bed as soon as the dinner dishes are done?

This weekend I succumbed to the early darkness and went to bed as soon as I could. Of course I was then up and awake way too early. I am also still battling that sinus stuff the showed up two weeks ago, in time for my races and is insisting on wearing out it’s welcome. I felt so bad Friday I messaged Jeff and canceled for Saturday. I really wanted to stay in bed all day, but the grand littles weren’t having that. In fact Lessa took it as a day to be on her worst behavior for the week…..isn’t that typical for kids? As soon as Lessa and Caterina left and everyone was fed, I went to bed. I can’t tell you how glad I was to see them go…I felt so bad, after I told Jeff I was canceling, I wasn’t sure I was even going to the #saturday7amsocialclub. I knew I needed to; it was the beginning of the month and I needed to weigh in for the month, although I wasn’t excited to do so. I am still struggling to stay on track. I start the week with good intentions, but they quickly go out the window. I’m not sure what I need to do. I am going to figure it out though. I am still below my goal weight, which is good, but too far above my “happy weight” to be happy with myself. I need to find a way to keep my head in the game all week, not just a couple of days. If you have any ideas, please share. I’m open to suggestions. If you too are struggling let’s help each other. We are #bettertogether.

I have thought of trying a cleanse or a short fast to see if that will reset my mind. Have you tried any? Do you have any recommendations?

Of course we are also getting into “comfort food” season. This is good and bad. For me these are foods that I can prepare in the crock pot or pressure cooker and let them just cook away. Then we can eat almost anytime, because they are ready early, and there is usually plenty to freeze for another time making it much easier to have a meal ready. But they are also what they say “comfort food” and tend to be higher calorie or WW points. Yes, they can be made lighter and I try to lighten them where I can and not sacrifice flavor and think I have been successful for the most part. One thing I am not good at is what some call meal prepping: making meals ahead for the entire week.

Do you meal prep that way? What helps you do that?

I have a fear of things going bad before the end of the week, or not wanting what I’ve made ahead (which happens) and then I’m throwing out what would have been perfectly good food. I hate wasting food and that is my biggest fear with making too much ahead for the coming week.

This is also the time of year I tend to go inside and hibernate mentally. I’ve noticed it more the past few years. My dads birthday was this month on the 27th and my mom passed on the 20th just two days before thanksgiving. It makes this month a bit sad or contemplative. Maybe more contemplative than sad. It’s just hard sometimes and some years more than others.

On top of that I think I have “post race let down”. I didn’t think it would happen this time since I wasn’t in the best running frame of mind to start with (that’s the “I don’t have anything to train for” feeling). And it’s not like I don’t have plenty of other things going on. Maybe it’s time to sign up for the Another Mother Runner Stride through the Holidays plan.

By Saturday morning I felt much better than I did Friday and did get up and go to the #saturday7amsocialclub meeting. I did not contact Jeff to say I could make it after all. I didn’t think he would appreciate me changing again and I felt maybe I should take the day to rest anyway. I thought I might get some extra yoga practice in for my YTT requirements but I did not, until Sunday. Then my friend Linda, who’s in training with me messaged me that she found a class for Sunday afternoon and wanted to know if I wanted to go with her (one of our requirements is to take 8 classes of different yoga styles and write-up an observation of them). Since I was feeling better and had planned dinner to be done early I went. It was a good class, much different from what we anticipated, and if it weren’t in an area so hard to park and such we might be tempted to go back on a regular basis.

I made it through the weekend staying on track/plan. Now to keep it up for the week! Let me know if you have any suggestions!
