A Surprise Award

Happy Tuesday! Things are starting to return to normal (whatever that is)  here after the last weeks activities.

Is this good or bad? Lol! Is there such a thing as normal?

The sun is shining today and summer is still trying to hang on. I like the sunshine and warmth. I like that it’s warm but not oppressively hot and humid; although the humidity is higher than normal for fall. I do hope that it cools down a bit and the humidity disappears for the races, that are now less than two weeks away! My butterflies are starting to develop butterflies; by the way! I talked to my friend, Sid, this morning (he’s running the Baltimore Half with me) and he said he still gets goose bumps before each race. This is a man who has run over 200 full marathons and too many other races to count!

Today I am sharing a little something that happened last week. With the week being so crazy busy and my postings minimal, I had to wait to share.

Wednesday morning,  I woke up to an email from Feedspot Blog Reader! My blog. This blog.  Grandma2Glamma, was selected as one of the top 15 fitness over 50 blogs!!!

To say I was surprised would be putting it mildly! I am honored that my little contribution to the world of fitness and sharing my stories and journey with you has been recognized. I’m not quite sure how it happened but I’m sure your support, dear readers, was a big contributing factor. From the bottom of my heart, I thank you for liking, commenting, and sharing the blog and/or the social media posts. That is what helps to get the word and the blog out to more readers. I am honored and humbled to be selected. I hope to be sharing many more stories and endeavors with you.

Something Old/Something New

What a week it has been weather wise. Summer is still hanging on here with both hands and it is HOT!

Has fall made it to your neck of the woods yet?

Saturday, before we left for our little getaway, that I told you about yesterday, I headed off to my usual #saturday7amsocialclub AKA Weight Watchers meeting and my session with, Jeff, my trainer. Last week I decided, after talking it over with Jeff, to cut my workouts back to once a week until after the races (which are less than four weeks away now)! Twice a week with the added yoga and the running has been way too much. I felt I was burning out fast. I think once the races are done and I can switch my long run with my extra yoga practice I can get back to a regular schedule.

Of course that means we will be hitting everything on the one day we do meet. Saturday, to finish up he had me doing weighted planks.

Have you done weighted planks yet? What was your experience like?

I have done weighted planks before, and shared that with you, but only with one weight and the most was 45lbs. Saturday Jeff decided to increase weight in increments. I started at 35lbs for 30 seconds, then 60lbs for 30 seconds, then on to 70lbs for thirty seconds! As many of you know 70lbs is the amount of weight I lost. I honestly have no idea how I walked around with that much extra weight on my body! Don’t tell Jeff, but I’m sure I had at least another 15-30 seconds in me at that weight.

Before we left for our trip “The Man” said “you can run on the beach in the morning”. Wasn’t that nice of him? lol. I told him I was already one step ahead of him and had my running clothes packed. I was so ambitious I even put a yoga mat in the car! But I realized after we got there I left my head phones at home. My plan was to do one or the other. I was hoping to do both, but it didn’t happen.

I got up Sunday morning to run, and just as I was getting ready to head out the door, “The Man” woke up ready to go get coffee. I had talked myself into being ok without it, but tagged along. We got back and I headed for the run. By then traffic had started picking up so I didn’t go very far. The route that I knew and planned to run was pretty busy. I wasn’t very sure about going off the main roads, since I’m not that familiar with the neighborhoods so I ran out two miles out then back. I’m sure not having my headphones didn’t help either. Later we went down to the beach and I ran another mile barefoot in the sand (that counts for extra right?). I have never run on the beach or barefoot (for the sake of running) before. It was quite a different experience, one I should repeat. I ran a total of five miles in all. I think it was supposed to be my 18-20 mile week, though….yikes! This coming Sunday I have got to log as many miles as possible. I think the weather is supposed to be fall-ish, so hopefully that will make it easier to get some miles in. The next weekend will be Yoga Teacher Training and I will likely not get a run in and if I do it will be short.

That will also be the Rodan+Fields convention weekend in Vegas! I won’t be attending that live, but I have signed up for the virtual convention. I am so excited! There is going to be a new product(s) launch that I will be able to order right away!! We don’t know what it is yet, but the buzz is BIG and I can’t wait to share that with y’all! Last year at convention is when Lash Boost was introduced and you know how I love that!!

Powerlifting Meet

In May I had the chance to go watch a powerlifting meet! I met my trainer, Jeff, there. He was wanting to check it out since he would be competing in his first meet in June. It was held a little over a mile from my house, but I almost didn’t make it. It was on a Saturday and “The Man” knowing I had planned to go there, just had to go to Sams….have you noticed a theme here? I swear he thinks that store isn’t open any day other than Saturday. The women were up first, which is why I wanted to go early. I did manage to get there before the women finished. I am so glad I did! I got to see two ladies in the masters division, both in a different age and weight class than I am. Both lifting significantly more weight than I do, right now, and it’s possible they always will. There is a significant weight difference between us. But it was good to see. It was good to watch and see how the meets are run, and was great to see other women around my age and older powerlifting. I know that I am not alone with my craziness…there aren’t many of us, but we are there and maybe we can encourage other women to test the waters.

They were both named Linda. There was Linda Jo and Linda.

This is Linda. Linda is 60+ years young. Her final deadlift for the meet was 280+ pounds! She hit and won the gold for her age/weight class!! She is now in training for her next meet, it will take place in October in Orlando, FL.

I was able to speak with Linda for a few minutes before I left. She is amazing. She is a grandmother of five. She runs a non-profit, and she is a pastor. Linda has only been lifting for about two years. Like me she kind of fell into powerlifting while working with a personal trainer. He noticed she was good at picking up heavy stuff and convinced her to train as a powerlifter. She has taken the gold in her division in all her meets, so far. Linda has a Facebook page where she shares her journey. Go check out her page and give it some love. She has recently started training with a new trainer. He is 70+ and still competing and has set several of his own records.

This is Linda Jo. I was not able to speak with her. I do know that she and Linda were in the same weight class and their final deadlift was the same weight, but I don’t know about age. 

Linda Jo was definitely intense and intimidating. She certainly came with her “game face” on. To tell the truth she was a bit scary! Lol.

Linda and Linda Jo have different lifting stances. Linda uses a conventional stance where Linda Jo uses a sumo stance.

Either one is fine and allowed, it’s just what you’ve trained for and your preference. With the sumo stance apparently you don’t have to lift the bar up as far. I use the conventional stance. After watching this meet I tried lifting with the sumo stance and it was a bit weird, for me. Apparently, I am a conventional stance girl!

These two ladies are phenomenal. The women’s powerlifting masters division is going to be a force to be reckoned with one day. Have I convinced you to start lifting yet?

Workout Wednesday

This week is out of sync. Since we are planning on taking the grand littles back to school shopping, in Pennsylvania, Saturday I have altered my workout schedule for this week. “The Man” will likely want to leave earlier than we need to, so I won’t have my regular session with Jeff and will likely miss the #saturday7amsocialclub! Altering my schedule with Jeff means I will have six straight workout days, before a rest day! Boy, I hope I can survive it!

The last time I altered my schedule was three weeks ago. Not intentionally, but at the last-minute I had to miss my Wednesday workout. So come Saturday, which is arm day, I was not prepared for Jeff to decide we were going to work arms AND legs to make-up for missing a day…Since we usually only work arms on Saturday I don’t wear my lifting shoes, so we almost didn’t lift, but I suggested lifting barefooted and Jeff agreed. I must be a glutton for punishment!! Remind me why I do this?

Do you remember a few weeks ago, when I told I hit a new deadlift PR of 175 pounds? I told you then it was “almost” the amount I weighed when I started my weight loss journey more than three years ago. The significance didn’t hit me until afterward. I knew I had to keep working.

Well once we got into the lifting phase of this altered work out, Jeff, said we wouldn’t go for weight but volume….unless I wanted to, but we had already done a lot of work with squats and bench pressing. Now what do you think I did? He’s going to give me a choice between repping weights or hitting a new PR….This girl was going for it! Because that carrot was still dangling in front of my nose. My exact words to him were: let’s go for it! What’s the worst that can happen? I won’t get it? Wouldn’t be the first time. When I first went for 175 (earlier in the year) I wasn’t ready and I didn’t even know exactly what was on the bar. I took a potty break (it happens at my age, lol) and when I came back Jeff had added weight. I knew he had, but wasn’t sure exactly how much. I had tried to calculate it in my head, but hadn’t and I really think I just went for it too fast and wasn’t prepared for it.

We racked up 185 and I stared it down and literally walked back and forth, stalking it; for what seemed like forever. I was mentally getting myself ready. Then I went for it!

And I got it! A new PR!!! I knew once I pulled off the floor it was coming up! I have officially lifted more weight than my heaviest weight!!!! I was laughing and crying at the same time! Jeff and my son both said it looked easy. I’m not sure I would go that far, lol, but that two hundred may not seem so far-fetched after all.

If this wasn’t enough when I went in the following Wednesday Jeff had some crazy ideas. Since the weather was nice, after some warm ups with squats on that Smith Machine I showed you then a few traditional squats, we took our work out outside this is what he concocted:

After about ten of these Jeff had the brilliant idea that he would sit on the tire and have me lift it. I budged it some, but wasn’t able to fully get it up. Something to aim for the next time! Maybe.

This is why Jeff has said the weight I have gained back is muscle. He says I  can’t lift that amount of weight without getting stronger and I can’t get stronger without adding muscle….yada yada. Yes, I know but I still do not have to like it! This is the hardest part to wrap my head around. If you have any tips or hints on how to do that, please share!

Apparently I have gained or built my arm muscles. When “The Man” I went shopping this past weekend, I was trying on long-sleeved blouses. They fit my body and not my arms….first world/weightlifter problems? This did not so anything to help my thoughts about adding weight though.

Setting and Reaching New Goals

Last Wednesday, during my session with Jeff (my trainer), I set a new (temporary) deadlift PR! 175 pounds for 1 rep! You may remember I tried lifting this weight earlier this year, but was not able to budge it! Jeff said he thought I could have pulled it for two or gone up to 180! I wasn’t so sure….maybe.

The significance of that weight didn’t hit me until the next day when he sent me the video.

As many of you know on March 8, 2014 I returned to Weight Watchers. When I walked into that meeting I was at my heaviest weight ever 179.4 pounds.

To get back to my goal weight, I needed to lose almost 52 pounds. I reached my goal weight in January 2015, but continued to lose more; reaching a total weight loss of 70 pounds!!!

That deadlift on Wednesday night was almost what I weighed that day. It was 1.5 times what I currently weight and is 2.5 times the amount of weight I lost!!! 180, I’m coming for you!!! If I had realized Wednesday night, where I was at, I would have tried for it! Jeff, seems to think we will reach 200 before the end of the year! With marathon training, I don’t know, but you can bet I will reach for that brass ring! Marathon training is now starting to ramp up and get in full swing! More to come on that as the weeks fly by.

​Before starting to lift I had to warm up with a series of box squats.

The most weight we used for that was 105 pounds, which increased from 55 pounds (the weight of just the bar). The bar I used for the box squats is a “SS Yoke Bar” aka “Safety Squat Bar”. The reason for using this vs a regular bar is there is less stress on your forearms while gripping the bar, as you are gripping in the front of you vs holding the bar to the side as you would do with a straight bar. This also causes less fatigue for when you will be deadlifting, among other reasons which you can read about here. I have certainly noticed a difference since using the SS Bar on days that I am going to lift.

Training For The Run of my Life

Week one of full-out Baltimore Running Festival BRF and Marine Corps Marathon MCM training has ended.

Yesterday, I ran my first race in 2017; the Baltimore Women’s Classic-BWC. The BWC is one of the largest women’s only races around. It is a run to benefit women’s cancers.


This concluded my first week of “official” marathon training.

My time was slower than last year, which had improved from the previous year.  Over all not awful. Not the back of the pack; pretty much middle of the road all the way. But a step backwards.


I’m not so sure it wasn’t  slightly slower than the first year. A sign of my lack of running this past winter or the couple of pounds I’ve gained? Time will tell.

This is the third year I’ve participated in this race. I considered this to be a “shake-out” race and my “official” start to full-out training.

The problem or potential problem with this strategy is it puts me behind on mileage; according to “the plan”. I have altered my plan to make it up and/or catch up over the next couple of weeks. Hopefully this works out as I expect it to. This is what I did for my 2015 marathon and it worked. I am cautiously optimistic. My goal is to start and finish both. I am less worried about BRF than MCM. The Baltimore half has a five hour time limit. The marathon is only 6.5. That didn’t worry until I came up with plan to add the half the day before.

Yes, for those who don’t know I’m doing the half on Saturday and the full on Sunday; October 21 & 22, 2017! If you don’t know why I have decided to do this you can read about my “why” of the story here. This will not be easy and I am sure will challenge me to the center of my being. But I have:

The Cliff Notes version of the story is we are doing this to honor a local soldier killed in Afghanistan two weeks ago.

If you are a runner and have plans to run in the BRF (in any of the races), or would like to join us in Baltimore to run in honor Sgt. Eric Houck, please do. If you are running MCM and would like to honor him there, please do. This especially hits home for us as Eric was local, and his sister-in-law works with my daughter, Amanda.

I think of those two little children; the same age as my grand littles, (Noah and Miss Quinn), who will never see their daddy again, yet aren’t old enough to really understand why. There is a young wife and mother who will now have to raise these two little children alone. I think of a mother who has lost her son, and know that “there but for the grace of God go I”. I can’t say that I know how she feels, exactly, because I am one of the lucky ones. My oldest son was in the army and stationed at Ft. Drum when 911 occurred. I cannot tell you how scared I was that day when I heard the “towers” had been hit. It was many hours before I could reach him on the phone. In my mind I had visions of him on a plane leaving without word! Yes, I was one of the lucky ones; but I know the fear.

This is not the first time we’ve run for the fallen, but because Eric is a “hometown boy” we are trying to garner a large hometown presence to honor and remember him. I hope we can do that. To help his family know that he is not forgotten and will not be forgotten.

My time for these two races will not be a factor other than to finish in the allotted time frame. My original goal for MCM was to better my time from my first marathon. With the addition of the half a day before, that my be unrealistic; especially since this will be a very emotional series of runs, but I will do my best to finish.

You Can Do Hard Things

A rainbow, a sign

A Sign!

A rainbow. It has long been considered a sign, as far back as biblical days.

Last night when I left the gym, after yoga practice, I saw this rainbow in the sky. It was in close proximity to my house. Since I live less than a mile from the gym, I was able to make it home to snap a picture of it.

Why is this a sign? 

I’ve mentioned that I’ve been wrestling with a decision. Well, I made that decision, and last night set the wheels in motion to begin a new adventure.

I registered for Yoga Teacher Training!

Why was this a hard decision?

Well for starters it is far from inexpensive. So that was big factor. I am someone who thinks long and hard about spending major money on some thing, and this isn’t just pocket change. At least not for people I know.

Then there is the fact that I am running a marathon in October. That was actually my first concern. The classes start in September and are nine weekends long. When I first read that, the information made it sound as if it was nine weekends in a row. That would have been a problem for sure. Why? Well, you can’t miss a class unless it’s an emergency or pre arranged, and then you have to make it up. Since the classes are Friday night, and all day Saturday and Sunday it would have taken away my long run Sundays and that would have been when the milage was ramping up. There would have been no way to make that up.  When I was able to talk with my yoga instructor Kim, who is also the teacher for the school, I found out it was one weekend a month for nine months. That definitely put it back on the table. I can work two weeks of long runs around two weekends.

Then there is my powerlifting training, which hasn’t been as intense a training regime because of my marathon training. You cannot train hard for lifting while endurance training. My, trainer, Jeff has been completely on board with the Yoga Teacher Training (YTT) and said that it would not interfere with my lifting.

If running the marathon wasn’t enough, I came up with a brilliant idea on my way to the ocean last week. What was it? For my daughter and I, to run or walk the Baltimore Running Festival (BRF) Half Marathon on the Saturday 10/21, before the Marine Corp Marathon (MCM) on Sunday 10/22!!! Yes, really, I did! I haven’t even told Jeff this yet, I will do that tonight. We are back to our regular schedule.

Since I had been considering the Dopey Challenge in Disney for January and wasn’t able to get in, this is the same as the Goofy Challenge, that I thought about before getting in to the MCM. The main difference is the highest training milages will be in the summer and not the fall…..it will require running two days back to back to train, which will challenging; especially in the heat and humidity. I have figured out how to work my training runs around the YTT training and I think I have come up with a workable plan!

Why did I do this?

On Saturday 6/10 there were three soldiers killed in Afghanistan (you may have heard about it on the news). One of these young me was the brother in law of my daughters co-worker and is a local, hometown boy; Sgt. Eric Houck. I contacted my running friend Sid Busch (I’ve told you about him before), but you can read a bit about him here. This article is a couple of years old, from his 200th marathon. He ran that the day I ran my first! I asked him, if he had not already picked a soldier to run for in Baltimore, if he would consider running for Eric. He, of course, agreed. After I really got to thinking about it. Amanda and I (or maybe it was just me) decided we could add the half to our weekend and run with Sid. This race has a five hour time limit and we can walk the entire thing if we need to and still make it for the marathon. Sid gives his race medal, bib, shirt, etc to the family of the soldier he runs for. Eric had two little children, Noah and Quinn’s age, we decided by running with Sid we could give our medals to the children to have a remembrance. We will also be running MCM in his honor and have submitted his information to be added to the “blue mile” there.

It won’t be easy but…..my motto and the Plunder anthem for this year is:

Ironically when I gave Kim my application and registration fee last night I mentioned still be scared silly. Her words to me were: “It will be hard, but you can do hard things, you have done hard things, you run marathons, That is not easy, it is hard!”

Well when you look at it that way….and add the rainbow. I took it as a sign that I made the right decision.

She also told me it would challenge me to look and my light and dark side. To examine me. I knew this and I think this might scare me just a bit!

This Sunday I will run my first race of this year, the Baltimore Women’s Classic (BWC) 5K. This is one of the largest Women’s only races around and helps to support research for women’s cancers. This will kick off my “official” Half/Marathon training. The 5K isn’t as far a distance as I should run for this week, but I have adjusted my plan to quickly ramp up my milage (safely) over the next few weeks to get where I should be. Remember I tend to work training plans “MY WAY” anyhow…..

It’s Global-Running-Day

What are your running must haves

Today is “Global Running Day”! How are you planning on celebrating? Will you hit the road or the dreaded treadmill AKA deadmill? Which do you prefer? Me? The road! Hands down.

I’m not sure yet what I will do today. Today is leg day with, Jeff, my trainer. I usually warm up by walking on the treadmill at the gym. Maybe I will get there early and get a mile in outside (if it isn’t raining again) before we start. He will yell about that though. He says I shouldn’t do cardio before a strength work out…..It will be 8pm though when we finish and after leg day. Run? Who? Only if he runs with me, lol!!!

Since its Global Running Day, I thought I would share some of my running “must haves”; besides (what I think is) the obvious, running shoes!

Here they are, in no particular order:

  1. Phone–This is a necessity, for a couple of reasons. 1-I use it for music and the MapMyRun app which tracks distance, time, and is my interval timer. 2. For emergencies! You just never know.


2. RoadID–This should speak for itself. You never know when something could happen and you are not be to contact someone or tell emergency personnel who to contact. I ordered my RoadID after falling during training for my last marathon and have worn it for every run since, no matter how short. This one I wear on my wrist, but they have a variety of selections from wrist to shoe tags or you can even just get a “plate” that will fit on your running watch, etc. When I ordered mine and it came, I found that I had entered a phone number incorrectly. I knew that I had entered a number wrong, but thought I “fixed” it before submitting my order. Apparently not. When I called to have it remade, they did it at no charge and didn’t charge for shipping either. I highly recommend them.


3. Headphones–It’s kind of hard to listen to music without them, lol, unless you want to share with those around you. I actually only use one so that I can hear what is going on around me. I put it in my left ear only. I run towards traffic so my right ear is facing the road and I can hear what’s coming up behind me. For years I could not wear “headphones/earbuds” they all hurt my ears on the inside. When Apple came out with their “EarPods” they were better, but not great. “The Man” talked me into trying Bose (for sound). I resisted. Who needs to spend that kind of money on something that wouldn’t make a difference (this was before Bose had a wireless option). The comfort level, because of the design was like night and day!!!! So I left with my Bose “wired headphones”. After a while though running with wires became annoying. At that time Bose didn’t have a wireless option, so the quest began to find a pair that would work. I found Plantronics BackBeat Fit. They “hook” over your ear and are somewhat soft. They worked but I didn’t love them. Then I found the Samsung Gear Circle. They were ok, but I didn’t love them either. During this time I kept checking with Bose because I knew they were working on a wireless design. Finally, they were released last year, just a few days before my birthday! Happy Birthday to ME!!!!! They fit my ears just like the wired version, and they are easy to use and make and receive calls. They say they should last for 6 hours of continual use. I haven’t tested that yet, but we will see come October when it’s marathon time. That will definitely put them to the test.

  1. Running Pants/Shorts with pockets–I put my phone and fuel in the pockets. I tried using an arm band for my phone, but I didn’t like it. I like being able to just grab it from my pocket as I’m running if I need to. My favorite workout clothes are from Lululemon. I find they fit me better, and the compression is bar none. They are pricey, but no more so than some other brands, and if you hit it just right you can often find them marked down almost 50%. And lets face it, I don’t care if they are last years print!!! They will also hem long tights to whatever length you want free of charge. I even had a pair that I had cut off “re-hemmed” after my fall because they got a hole in the knee.
  2. FitBit Surge–although I also use MapMyRun to track my runs and distance, I like to be able to glance down and see where I’m at. There are many “running” watches you can get, but since I already had a FitBit and liked participating in challenges, this was what I picked.


6. Water–I always take water with me, if I plan to run more than four miles or the weather is hot and humid. If I’m going for a short run I just use a hand-held water bottle. If it isn’t too hot or humid I can usually make it through a five-mile run ok. This one is great because you just slip it on your hand. You don’t have to “hang on to it” and worry about dropping it. It also has a little pouch for your, ID, money, and a key.


But I use a hydration pack for longer runs and races. This one is a CamelBak Mini M.U.L.E. and holds 1.5 liters. I have a larger one that hold 2.0 liters that I will use on marathon day.


Although the races have water stops I make sure to have my own. There’s worse than needing to hydrate and the next water stop is a mile away! I learned that two years ago when I didn’t take water for a 5K. I had been running without it at home, and knew they would have two water stops; so I thought I would be ok. I was, all in all, but I found because of the heat and humidity I wanted water when it wasn’t available. I tend to take a sip of water on odd intervals and practice that in training. If I need it more often I will drink more. I use the water stops, on the course, to grab a sip of Gatorade at those that offer it.

The next items are things I use, but not every time I run.

  1. Lighting Source–I only use this if I’m going to be running in low light. But since I run on the road vs sidewalks I make sure to have it when I know I will need it! This is another item “The Man” talked me into. It’s the Tracer 360 by Noxgear. You can order it directly from them or Amazon. This is very lightweight, and has a variety of color options for the light. That’s good because it you make sure it doesn’t blend in with your clothing. It will flash or stay static. I use it on static. I know flashing lights can bother some drivers and I want to be safe…..They even make them for your pets! I will use this even though it’s summer. As I ramp up training miles, and the heat and humidity kick up, I will have to leave earlier in the morning and it will still be dark or too dark to run without making sure you are visible.

  1. Running Buddy Pouch–This is a great pouch, again thanks to “The Man”. It has strong magnets and can hook to the waist band of your pants to hold your phone and other necessities. He thought it would be good for pants without pockets. I will use it during the marathon to hold extra fuel for the run. I will hook over the strap of my hydration pack and put the fuel that won’t fit in my pockets in it. They have a variety of sizes and products. There are plenty of pockets in the hydration pack, and I will make sure to have extra supplies there in case (I’m a woman after all), but they can be hard to get to and since I run mainly alone there’s usually no one to help get it out while continuing to run. When you’re slow already, you don’t want to waste precious seconds playing around.

  2. Fuel–There are many types of gels, goos, etc available to add carbohydrates to your body for fuel. These are the ones I use. I have tried the gels and they are just straight up nasty IMO!!! These Honey Stinger Chews have worked well for me since the beginning. They come in a variety of flavors and you can get them at many of your local running stores, health food stores, and of course Amazon. I don’t use them until I get up to around 6-8 miles. When I get to that point I eat 2-3 every 5-6 intervals or 20-30 minutes on average.

A New Month A New Weigh In

The first Saturday of the month. If you’ve been following me for a while, you know what that means. It’s time for weigh in at the weekly meeting of the #satuday7amsocialclub AKA Weight Watchers. This is the second month in a row that I have had a gain of a couple of pounds. I am still well below goal, but I can’t keep this up and stay there for long!

I have to tell you I’m still no sure how much it is the increase in weightlifting how much is what I’m doing food wise. I went into last week pretty sure I was going to be around the same as last month. I had come to terms with that gain (somewhat).

When I weighted myself on Wednesday I was good. Well Wednesday needs to be taken off the calendar. That is the day I want to eat all the things. Sometimes I do ok, sometimes not. Last week was a not. Ok it wasn’t the worst early, but..then I had my session with Jeff. I came home and ate like a mad woman! I tried to eat mainly protein, but, come Thursday morning that scale was not my friend 😳 not that I was surprised. I almost always have a gain the day after an intense workout. Friday’s WI was the same as Thursday. Instead of leaving well enough alone, I had to compound it by going out to eat (something I try to never do before WI) and got shrimp and crab….now seafood is good and low points, so overall it’s good choice. Right? But this is Baltimore, Land of Old Bay!  Can we say sodium? Yeah, that wasn’t very well thought out! Add another two pounds on to what it was that morning, when it could have been down. Yep, a whole FOUR pounds up from May….still well below goal and free for the month, but not good, but I did do it to myself….

Last weeks meeting was not very well attended. Very unusual for the first of the month, for sure!

 

I don’t know if it was because it was the week following the holiday and people were out-of-town or if they were in the same boat I was and stayed home.

“The Man” had jokingly said something about going away for the weekend, maybe I should have pushed for it 😳 it might have saved me from myself….or not, but I could have put off weighing for a week, lol!

I left that disaster of a weigh in and headed off to the gym, Jeff and “arm day”! Now Jeff is still insisting a big factor in this gaining is me building muscle and getting stronger. He always reminds me that “he told me this would happen”. I guess that’s an “I told you so”…. He pointed out the work we were doing, the amount of weight I was lifting and working with that day and how much my should stability had improved. I had to agree with that. My upper body has always been my weak spot, but after he said something I was able to see and realize how much better it is. Maybe he is half right?

I am going to try to ride this out, but I must say it is hard!!!!

I have to keep saying this to myself, everyday! For those on their own journey, how are you doing? Do you have your own mantra? What keeps you going when the going gets tough? Now that it’s “almost” summer, do you find it easier or harder to stay on a plan? Let me know what you think!

Running To Remember Those Who Gave It All

Land of the Free, Because of the Brave

Today is a day to reflect, to remember, to honor. This morning I ran. Whether it was going to happy was iffy. For the past two days I’ve been fighting some GI issues, so Sunday Runday didn’t happen. Oh, I was running, but…

I knew if I could I would run this morning and dedicate my miles in Remembrance of those who gave it all, because of them we are the:


And in honor of those who are serving.

My plan this week called for four miles. After yesterday, I wasn’t sure what I could do, but I was determined that today (if I wasn’t still in biliary he**) I was going to do something. I had to make sure to stay close to home, just in case…. I knew I should I least try for the same three I did last week, but hoping I could get the four. I did:


This run started out like a comedy skit straight out of an I Love Lucy episode! My Map My Run IntervalTimer didn’t work, so I had to resort to my back up timer, that is set for different intervals, the delayed start didn’t beep to alert me it was time to start, etc…..Of course having to make changes as I was running slowed me down some (and I need no help with that, lol).

All in all I can’t complain. I was able to keep up with my intervals, even after being sick and not eating or really hydrating for a couple of days.  My pace although a bit slower than it has been in the past, was better than my last run and managed to eek out some negative splits!


As you can see I slowed down for the last mile, but I got it in and done!

As you spend your day today with family and friends. Maybe cooking out and eating some good food; please make sure you take a moment to remember those who gave it all (members of the armed forces, police officers, and firefighters) so that we have the freedoms we do. Also remember to honor and say a prayer or send a good thought up for those who are putting their lives in the line every day as well.
