There’s a New Game in Town

Do you follow the crowd or blaze your own trail? When something new comes to town do you rush out to see what all the fuss is about or wait?

We usually wait a bit to let the craziness die down and to hear some feedback. This is an especially good idea if food is involved! Of course, when something is new they will also put their best foot forward.

A couple of weeks ago a new donut shop opened in town. Duck Donuts.

Have you heard of them? Do you have them in your town? Have you been there?

What is Duck Donuts?

Well a donut shop, of course, lol! I bet the name gave that away, haha. But what makes them noteworthy? Are they worthy of the hype? We/I decided to find out.

We had never heard of them until they opened up a few weeks ago near one of the local malls. Jeff, my trainer (of all people), told me about them, lol! He went there the day they opened….Maybe he was thinking if he turned me on to them it would be job security, hahaha!

We didn’t set out to go there. But Sunday morning “The Man” decided he (needed) to go to the hardware store…why, who knows. We didn’t “need” anything from there. It dawned on me as we were driving over that we would by the donut shop, so why not check it out?

At Duck Donuts they make your donuts to order. That’s right you go in grab an order form and choose your poison…

They even have a sign to instruct you in how to order.

Not feeling adventurous or creative? Too many choices? They had a suggestion for you.

Need more inspiration or ideas? As if there weren’t enough choices, they a sign with some more.

All of the donuts start with the same base. There is only one “type” of donut. A fried circle of deliciousness.

This is a larger version of the mini donut machines you might find at flea markets, farmers markets, fairs, and such.

Then comes the toppings. This is where “made to order” comes in.

The donuts are made fresh and not topped until you order them. You tell them how you want it, and they make it!

Our finished product. They do look yummy, but are they? Will they live up to the hype?

I will say without a doubt these are not WW point friendly ūüė≥! And no, I did not even try to figure it out….some days you just enjoy and FFMO; Forgive, Forget, Move, On

The Duck Donut, creed, mission statement?

Did they live up to this?

Overall they did. The place was clean, although a tad messy; which is to be expected when so busy. There was a line to the door when we arrived and still that long when we left, but it moved right along. The staff was friendly, helpful and patient with everyone. They girl topping our donuts saw my phone out and asked if I wanted to take a photo before she covered them (one might think they are used to that happening). The customers were waiting patiently, some were repeat customers others, like us, new and curious.

The price was fair, a bit more than the other popular chain with the same initials (DD) but not significantly.

But I bet you’re really wondering if the donuts were good!

Yes, they were. They were hot and scrumptious. We brought them home, which is about 8 miles away (good thing), made a couple of stops on the way, and they were still a bit warm when we arrived and ate them. I will say I found them extremely sweet, which was likely due to the toppings we chose. I am not a fan of overly sweet donuts. Even being from the south I do not care for Krispy Kreme’s because they are so sweet. I prefer the other DD shop because they aren’t as sweet, IMO. If you need to get your “sugar fix” in though, this will do it!

Will we go back?

Most likely, yes. Not often, it’s not convenient or worth it to just drive over there for a donut or two, but if we are close by for other shopping we will stop in on occasion. For a treat. I am curious to try a more plain version and see what I think.

After this little indulgence, experience, experiment? I am back on my regularly scheduled healthy eating routine.

Don’t forget about the Rodan+Fields “Christmas in July” special I told you about yesterday. It’s a great way to try Rodan+Fields or just get started! Are you ready to sign on as a consultant? Go to http://jearlingbencivenni.myrandf.biz¬†and click on become a consultant to sign up.

Oh, and we never made it to the hardware store, lol. We found the donut shop first and “The Man” decided to head on home; even though we made those few other stops first.

Until the next time

Thursday Simple Pleasures 7/20

It’s Thursday! What does that mean? It’s almost Friday and the weekend? Well, that too, but, it’s time for our Simple Pleasures!!

This week my simple pleasure is fresh homegrown tomatoes and tomato sandwiches.

We enjoy going to the Baltimore Farmers Market every year. It is open from April thru December. I like going the first week it opens, just because, but we don’t usually go often the first few weeks because there isn’t much produce. There are a lot of plants and such, but those plants are much better off if I leave them there, lol!

A couple of weekends ago we went and I got some great tomatoes! I ate tomato sandwiches for lunch every day the following week! They were so delicious! Such a simple thing, but oh soooooo good! Do you enjoy fresh grown tomato sandwiches? What do you put on yours? I like just a bit of mayo and a little S&P. Sometimes I’ll make a BLT but when I want a tomato sandwich, I really just want tomatoes, lol!

I don’t know about where you live but folks here in Maryland swear Maryland tomatoes are better than any other. Ironically folks from New Jersey (where “The Man” is from) will tell you the same thing! I agree and disagree with them all, lol! I have had tomatoes grown Maryland, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Florida, New York, Canada, and South Dakota. They are all absolutely great! But I will say this, they were all “homegrown, vine ripened” tomatoes. Tomatoes bought at farm stands or farmers markets; not tomatoes bought at the grocery store, that are half green looking or pinkish. That is the key. There is nothing like a tomato picked ripe from the vine, grown in nutrient rich soil!

I usually buy from the same farmers each year, although My M.O. is to walk through the entire market when I arrive. I do this to see what is available, and the cost. I then walk back through and make my purchases based on availability and sometimes cost, but cost is not the deciding factor. The overall quality and freshness that day is. Then I make my purchases. I then often cris cross the market making my purchases so that I purchase the heaviest items on my out. We often take a wagon with us if planning on making a lot of purchases.

This photo is from five years ago. Wasn’t Noah so cute chasing down his wagon?

Noah enjoyed riding and eating our purchases!

Are you fortunate to have farmers markets? What are some of your favorite finds? What is your simple pleasure for this week?

Happy Anniversary

37 years ago today, “The Man” and I got married. And we’re still married, lol!

The odds were probably not in our favor. Talk about a “whirlwind” romance; we met on May 20, 1980 (I was 16), I turned 17 on June 14th, and we got married July 8, 1980! Yes, just seven weeks to the day! Oh, and, “The Man” is a few years older than me…

Then July 8, 1980
If your next thought was: we “had to get married” you would be wrong. I guess you could say it was “love at first sight”. In less than a week we were talking about and making plans to get married. It could be said I wanted to “get away from home” and on some level that might be true. I do know and knew that if we had not married when we did, my mother (who had mental issues) would have done all she could have to interfere. Even after we were married and up until she passed in 2001, she periodically did whatever she could to break us up! Enough about that for now!

However….

Just a bit over a year later, on July 23rd, baby number one came along, and before we had our fifth anniversary all three had arrived.

It hasn’t always been easy! We have had hard times, good times, bad times, and fun times.  Some days I want to throttle him…..And I wouldn’t doubt he feels the same…..lol! But at the end of the day, it comes down to loving each other and being determined to work out our differences and work through the problems. As the Diamond Rio song states “we meet in the middle”.

We have been truly blessed. We have three great, reasonably well adjusted kids that are each successful in their own way, and six beautiful grand littles. I am blessed that I have been able to spend almost everyday with some of them. We have all that we need and most of what we want.

Today we are heading to Lancaster, PA to Dutch Wonderland, an amusement park, with two of the grand littles. We usually go away for the weekend on our anniversary, this is the third year in a row we haven’t. I had lofty ideas of surprising him with a trip to Hawaii for our 35th, but we got the surprise (fortunately before I had booked the trip) our youngest son finally proposed and they get married a week after our anniversary. A big trip and a wedding wasn’t possible; especially since they were originally thinking of getting married in Las Vegas. Two big trips in that time span would have been too much for sure. Then last year we had our DILs baby shower on our anniversary weekend. So I’m just putting this out there now…because if it’s on the internet it has to be true…right? We are going somewhere fabulous for 40, so no weddings, babies and such in three years, lol! Got that guys?!? Hahaha!

We have arrived! Hopefully this makes sense as I was writing on my phone, while riding.

Now July 8, 2017

Have a great weekend!

Until the next time

Fashion Friday-Travel Outfit/Style Club Challenge 7

A simple shift dress, styled three ways

As you know I went away last week. Before going I was asked if I could ¬†write a post about what I wear for travel. I mentioned last week that my traveling attire was nothing to write about. Or so I thought. For the most part comfort has been my only requirement. We drive mostly to our destinations and dressing up to spend hours in the car is not fun. When I was overweight I certainly didn’t care, and had adopted an attitude of I’d likely never see those same people again; so who cared?

That may not have been the best strategy.

Even after losing the weight, I didn’t really think too much about it. This is what I wore to and from Florida on vacation last year. On our way we stopped in my hometown of Jacksonville. I met up with my sister at the cemetery to “visit” those who are no longer with us.

I’m on the left, for those who don’t already know me. Now keep in mind we were traveling in the car for over twenty hours each way, so comfort was key. And it was August so heat and humidity were a big factor. All in all I guess this wasn’t too bad and definitely can qualify as an “athleisure” look, with emphasis on the “leisure”….

I decided it was time to up my game, and this is what I came up with for this trip.

The one thing I didn’t count on when I found this dress was how easily it would wrinkle. Other than that it was just about¬†perfect! The only thing that could make it better would be those little snaps that some dresses have to hold your bra straps in place and pockets. I have come to like simple dresses with pockets! Why, I don’t know. It isn’t like I really put stuff in them, but I like them. The little bra strap hooks things are fabulous though. I may be able to add them myself.

See how useful those little “strap hooks” would be for this dress

I was actually able to use this for this weeks style club challenge too. I have not been as active in this months challenges as I had hoped to be. It seems the month completely got away from me, and fast! I have figured out a way to make some of it up and will have some new looks for you and the club soon!

I was hoping to be able to get some photos shot while away, but that thought went out the window quickly. I was able to photograph this dress, but that was it. It was a bonus that I could use it for the style challenge!

Our assignment last week was to style one dress three different ways; using a belt (I didn’t), a scarf, and a hat (you know the hat was up my alley)! I didn’t even realize when I photographed this that it would work, for the challenge I was just hoping to have a blog post. But I’m glad it did!

Here was my idea for taking this simple dress from day to an evening out, by adding a scarf, heels, and matching bag for a monochromatic look. Since I was traveling and knew we would be going straight to the beach, pretty much, I did not wear any make up. But this is the real me. More often than not I don’t wear makeup and in triple digits with humidity….well.

I was in such a hurry to get this done, before the littles went into melt down mode that I forgot to take my watch and FitBit off. This little dress came from Target. The scarf is from White House Black Market. I fell in love with it this past fall. The shoes you’ve seen before from Payless and the little bag is from Coach. Most of the jewelry is from Plunder. The earrings are in the new catalog and called Bowie. As large as they look they are very light and you don’t even know you are wearing them.¬†The bracelets on the left, you’ve seen before. They are retired with the exception of the one with the turquoise beads. The bracelets on the right are my Alex and Ani bracelets along with the Plunder Lindy bracelet that has my initial. It was retired too, when the spring line came out. I decided against a necklace since there was such a bib detail already on the dress. I did try a couple and everything seemed to just get lost in the dress.

Here is my “hat look”.

Of course you know as soon as we went outside and I put a hat on the winds kicked in and I was fighting the hat the entire time! I removed my earrings before heading to the boardwalk. These sandals are the ones I wore on the ride down. They are my favorite Vince Camuto brand and came from the Home Shopping Network (HSN). The hat is from Betsy Johnson and came from HSN also, last year. The little cross body bag is by Vera Bradley and is at least eight years old and it has quite a history…..

What do you think of my somewhat “retro” sun shades? I took a lot of “ribbing” for those….and guess what I did? I put them in my little bag to get on a ride with Noah, then put my phone in next to them without thinking. See where it is in the pocket in the picture? I lost a brand new phone (as in three days old new) in Disney in 2009 out of this same purse, from that same pocket, on the Tower of Terror….so of course I knew not to leave it there….when I took my shades out to put them back on, one of the lenses was all scratched up; right in my line of sight…..my phone case has some little “blingy” jewels on it, and I must have put that side next to the lenses of the glasses. I think it’s time to not use this bag for amusement parks.

On the bright side, at least those glasses were inexpensive. I got them from BJs wholesale club. I went back this past weekend and they still had some. I bought a new pair of the same ones along with a different pair. I had not told “The Man” about my little accident until we were at the store and I saw they still had some. I went to pick them up and he said “didn’t you just buy a pair of those a couple of weeks ago”? And the rest of that story went something like this: “Why, Yes, Yes, I did…but what had happened was”…..I felt like Lucy “splainin” to Ricky, lol! Can you believe he was not amused?

What do you think about taking a simple shift dress, and styling it three different ways? Can you think of anything different to do with it?

Two of my precious littles

Remember, since it’s still June, your comments still count towards the Plunder Give Away for the rest of this week and next! So keep them coming! I’m having fun giving y’all gifts!

Plunder has also just released new sign on incentive. I know a couple of you have been on the fence about joining me with Plunder. Well, now is the time!

If you join before the end of June you could earn the $99 fee you pay for your starter kit back AND be eligible for the Plunder cruise in January!!! How awesome is that?

Where else can you start your own business for $99, earn that money back, so essentially you’ve started your business for nothing, and earn a free cruise? The jewelry pictured is what will come in your starter kit. This is your jewelry to wear, display, or sell (if you want). If you change mind about being a Plunder Stylist, at the least you’ve bought 8 gorgeous pieces of Plunder for much less than you would have paid per piece. Email me at Grandma2Glamma@gmail.com for more details or if you are ready to join. You can also just click here¬†then click on “PLUNDER OPPORTUNITY” then¬†“STARTER KIT” and sign up. I hope to see you on the cruise!!!

Guilty or Simple Pleasures

Do you have a guilty or simple pleasure? I have two. They are both food related, go figure, Lol.

In the fall/winter it is this.

Peppermint stick ice cream.

I have loved this since I was a little girl. One of my fondest memories with my dad was going to the mall and getting an ice cream cone from Baskin Robins. I would always get peppermint stick (I don’t think they have it anymore and I no longer live near that mall). I remember being so excited when I was old enough for a double scoop! Finally, several years ago, various brands started bringing it out around¬†the holidays. Now as soon as I see it in the store, I buy it! I don’t care if it’s on sale or not!! I must have it. I have learned to “stock-up” when it goes on sale so that I can have it as long as possible; until it hits the stores again usually by mid/late October! I did see in one year in September. I really am like a kid in a candy store when I see it.

I have two containers left in the freezer. This is the longest I ever had it into the year. They might almost get me through until it is available in the store again! Once I get towards the last of it, I will literally eat one spoonful at a time only to make it last.

I will share it with the grand littles. They have actually had it before they ever had real food (don’t tell). I have to think long and hard about sharing with anyone else, though, lol!

My other guilty/simple pleasure is fresh cherries!

As soon as I see them in the store and they look good, I must get them, too. They are usually quite pricey early on, but I will splurge if I think they look like they will be good and sweet.

I consider these “guilty” pleasures because I will get them regardless of price (I won’t do that with just anything). The ice cream is a “simple pleasure” because it brings back memories of a special time. The cherries just remind of summer and a new season.

What are some of your guilty/simple pleasures? Do you have more than one? Please do share!

Have you signed up for the blog emails yet? If not there is now a subscribe box at the top right hand side of the post. You can also click follow on the pop up box. If you had previously signed up for the emails, are they coming through ok? I want to make sure everything is working correctly since making the changes.

I have added a new feature also. Now you can hover on a picture that is on the blog and “Pin It (save)” to your pinterest boards. Please feel free to pin away!

Please continue to like share and comment on the posts. It helps so much to get the blog out to others and that is what is helping it to grow and I greatly appreciate that.
